On 1 March 2022, Ms Camilla Langsholt, the responsible for Energy and Environment Programmes of the Financial Mechanism Office and Mr. Michael Steinfeld from the Norwegian Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), partner under Programme Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Energy Security, visited kindergarten No 94 “Child world” in the town of Buhovo. The childcare facility will be renovated under a project within BGENERGY-1 .002 Procedure – “Use of geothermal energy for heating or heating and cooling in state or municipal buildings” with beneficiary Sofia Municipality. The grant agreement will be signed on 10 March and the funds are provided by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism. The meeting was attended by representatives of the municipality and the mayor’s office, as well as by representatives of the Ministry of Energy as Programme Operator and the Administration of the Council of Ministers as National Focal Point.
The purpose of the visit was to learn about the activities that will be carried out under the project. It is envisaged to replace the naphtha currently used in the heating system of the kindergarten with geothermal energy. A heat pump installation “land-water” type that uses heat from the earth will be built for this purpose. High-selective solar collectors will be installed on the roof of the building for the provision of household hot water supply.
Procedure BGENERGY-1 .002 “Use of geothermal energy for heating or heating and cooling in state or municipal buildings” was published in March 2021 with a deadline of application of 10 September 2021. The procedure provides for allocation of grants for reconstruction of existing or construction of new systems for heating or heating and cooling, using geothermal energy in buildings of state and municipal administration, which are not used for carrying out economic activity. The total budget of the procedure was EUR 3.4 million and applicants were entitled to receive 100% grants without a requirement to provide co-financing.
In the project proposal “Building geothermal and reconstruction of indoor heating installations in two kindergartens in the territory of the Kremikovtsi region, Sofia Municipality” includes activities for deployment of renewable energy sources in two kindergartens, as follows:
Regarding Kindergarten, No 94 “Child World”, town of Buhovo:
Construction of a heat pump system “land-water” type, utilizing the heat from the earth subsoil through a serpentine dug in the yard of the kindergarten;
Reconstruction of the indoor heating system;
Delivery and installation of highly selective solar collectors for household hot water supply;
Regarding Kindergarten, No 58 “Shiny morning”, residential quarter Chelopechene:
Construction of a heat pump system “land-water” type, utilizing the heat from the earth subsoil through a serpentine dug in the yard of the kindergarten;
Reconstruction of the internal heating installation and installation of ventilating convectors for high-wall installation.
The budget of the project proposal is BGN 594 341,64 with VAT included and the project partner is the Icelandic company Verkis HF. The deadline for implementation of the project is 18 months.
The implementation of the project is expected to result in annual energy savings of 189 727 kWh and a total reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the atmosphere by 289,33 tonnes/year.
