In the period 11.08 - 16.08.2024, the first expedition under the SCIRENA II project "Diagnostic analysis of the Black Sea marine environment with regards to the military activities in the territory of Republic of Ukraine", financed under the Fund for Bilateral Relations under the Environment Protection and Climate Change Programme (EPCCP) of the EEA FM 2014-2021was carried out.

The SCIRENA II project is implemented by the Institute for Marine Research of the Kingdom of Norway, "Nikola Vaptsarov" Naval Academy and the Black Sea Basin Directorate and is a natural continuation of the SCIRENA Black Sea project, which was successfully completed within the framework of EPCCP.

The expedition was conducted aboard the research vessel "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" by carrying out sampling at selected coastal and deep-sea sites, with a focus on mapping the seabed and habitats, contaminants in biota and sediments at selected coastal and deep-sea sites points. Indicators (descriptors) of human pressure on biodiversity and economically important species for the Black Sea were surveyed and analyzed.

In addition to the partnering organizations from the Republic of Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Norway, representatives of "Asen Zlatarov" University, Burgas, Technical University, Varna and Institute of Oceanology, Varna were also invited to participate in the research.
