On 31 July 2023 from 12 pm in the Amphitheatre of the “Vazrajdane” park in Sofia, an official ceremony for the launch of the repair activities of the park facility, carried out by Sofia Municipality, a partner under the Predefined project №3"Implementing innovative measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change in municipalities in Bulgaria", financed under the “Environment protection and climate change” Programme of the EEA FM 2014-2021, was held.
The event was opened by Mrs Yordanka Fandakova- Mayor of Sofia Municipality, the Deputy Mayor for "Green System, Ecology and Land Use" - Mrs. Desislava Bileva, the Mayor of "Vazrazhdane" District - Mrs. Savina Savova, Mrs. Irena Pencheva, the director of the National Trust EcoFund - Beneficiary under the project.
The pilot investment project of Sofia Municipality represents the allocation of an event venue – shared "cooled" space in the “Vazrajdane” park on the site of the Amphitheater facility located in a densely built-up urban environment, by applying shading solutions using nature-based solutions, allowing the maintenance of creepers and other vegetation resistant to heat and drought, construction of sprinkler systems (mist generators), construction of a rock garden with suitable climate-resistant vegetation, replacement of the existing pavement with a light pavement made of natural materials with low thermal capacity and installation of a movable screen and multimedia.
“I believe that it is extremely important to increase the ability of the society to cope with the effects from climate change. A key role here play the municipal authorities which need to increase their efforts to support actions to reduce emissions, reduce vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change as well as promote regional and international cooperation. To achieve this goals, however, a change of the mindset and the behavior of the society is necessary. The proposed investment activity contributes to such a change by setting a good example, enabling replication, raising public awareness.”, this is what was shared by the Mayor of Sofia- Mrs Yordanka Fandakova.
The main objective of the Predefined project №3 "Implementing innovative measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change in municipalities in Bulgaria" is to contribute to the increase of the opportunities of the local authorities to reduce the emissions and to adapt to climate change. The beneficiary under the project is the National Trust EcoFund, and eight Bulgarian municipalities participate as partners in the project - Sofia Municipality, Varna Municipality, Burgas Municipality, Kardzali Municipality, Plovdiv Municipality, Ruse Municipality, Stara Zagora Municipality and Sliven Municipality, in whose major cities threats from climate change related to heat island phenomena, landslides and floods, etc, have already been identified.. The project is implemented in partnership with the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS).
